What you need to know to know and why to maximize your cylinder head investment.
Introduction:
We, at Dart, asked engine research consultant, university lecturer and world renowned performance tech author (over 4000 magazine articles and 32 books with #’s 33 and 34 in the making) David Vizard to write up for us the results of his port volume tests. Our goal here is to show that bigger is not always better. A fifty year veteran of high performance engine building and dyno testing plus a 4 figure number of race wins using his go fast technology puts David Vizard in a unique position to do this write up from firsthand experience. My suggestion is take the time to read it and reap the substantial benefits that this knowledge will impart. (more…)

Dart heads and blocks are stamped or cast with various numbers that can tell you quite a bit about the part. Knowing how to read and interpret these markings can save a lot of time and hassle when you need to know exactly what you’re working with. (more…)

With Dart’s vastly improved oiling system, the need to “band-aid” the oiling system with a high volume oil pump is a thing of the past. Using a standard oil pump and today’s lifters, without restrictors, makes engine assembly easier and eliminates the guess work of determining restrictor size. (more…)

Dart’s Molybdenum Disulfide based coatings, such as the DC-4 lubricating coating often used on camshafts, are an excellent way to increase load capacity and improve durability… but you need to be selective about the type of break-in oil used on an engine that employs these coatings. (more…)

Airflow Fallacies: Avoiding the Pitfalls of the Flow Bench
By David Reher
“What’s it flow?”
Whenever a conversation about cylinder heads begins with that question, I cringe. I know where this discussion is going, and it’s not good. When a racer wants to distill the performance of a highly developed cylinder head down to a single number, I know I’m dealing with someone who is fixated on the flow bench. (more…)

It’s the middle of winter, a chill breeze blows the snow across a well-lit parking lot toward the Dart Machinery shop. A man dressed in thick winter clothes plods his way across the snow toward one of the entry-ways.
