Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  What cylinder head intake port size will perform best on my engine?
A:  Optimal intake port volume depends on the cubic inches, Rpm range, compression ratio,
primary usage (Street, strip or a little of both), and aspiration (Naturally aspirated, blower, nitrous, etc…)
of the intended application. But there are some general rules of thumb.

David Vizard on intake port selection:
So how do you decide what port volume your small block should have for best results? A good rule of
thumb is to base the port volume, and we are only talking traditional 23 degree
(or – in the case of Ford 20 degree) heads here, on the projected power output. However let me caution
you that that if you rate your engine's final output too optimistically (and an excess of optimism is a problem
most racers have) you will end up with a port that is too big and the target output will not be reached. What
this means is you could end up sabotaging your own efforts here.

If you go with the recommendations in the chart you should have a good starting point for port volume
selection.
