View Full Version : Mustang engine mounts
I'm building an engine for a 1965 Mustang. The original engine mounts don't seem to work with the Dart Iron Eagle block because of reinforcing ribs on the block just behind the mounting holes for the engine mounts. Has anyone else seen this problem? I hesitate to grind the block. What is the recommended after-market engine mount that will fit the Dart block's casting?
I also ordered a set of after-market mounts that claimed to be compatible with 289/302, but they had the same problem with the Dart block's design.

On the dyno, we just put some small spacers under the block and did a little grinding on the mount bracket. Worked fine. I do not know of anyone who makes these yet but a set of solid mounts would be easy to massage or just do your stock ones.
I found a set of mounts from Total Control Products that looks very good: TCP MM-FD-O2. I don't have them yet, but they look to have single-point-failure advantages over the stock mounts.
Grinding the stock mounts did work, but I'm concerned that the stock mounts may fail.

then try to make it with the new mounts, let me know if they work? We are putting these engines in at the install center and have run into this many times. Never seen one break or go bad yet. I just purchased a 92 Convertible for myself and we are making a 434 8.7" engine for the street. Can't wait, it does have one of our good AOD units in it and hope to run 11:50's in street trim with all the stock EFI. It will have a Dart Block also
I have not installed the engine yet because I'm waiting on other parts, but I did have to grind about an eighth of an inch off the mounts just inboard of the mounting holes. I also had to grind a little on one where the recess wasn't deep enough to accommodate one of the block's drain plugs. There's still plenty of meat left on the mounts, which look like a much better design than the stock mounts. (For one thing, they have plates on both sides of the shock tower.)

that is what we have found also, no big deal you just have to deal with it. Nothing fits! if it did, everyone would do it.
