I recently sold my 502 BBC because I had some extra time and wanted to build a brand new one from scratch. I could use some expert advice on how to achieve my goal of 650 hp. Throw it out there, I have the money with nothing else to spend it on. So far I have a short setup with a 4340 crank and JE pistons in. No cam yet but thinking about getting a solid versus a hydraulic. I'm not totally into making it blown but if I have to I will. So if anyone would tell me on where to go from here i would appeciate it. Thanks.

Ok, we did one last year for my buddy Jim. 502 Gm shortblock, new rod bolts, and balanced it. Zero decked it and that was it. Heads are a Dart Pro 1 325 with a 2.25 valve. Probably a little big, but wanted to leave room to grow. Cam is a HR 250/258 mid 600's lift with 1.7 arms. Edelbrock Pro Flo 2 fuel injection, with Lemons 2 1/8 x 4 headers with 3" exhaust. Makes right at 600/600. Solid roller and some more lift with a 1050 and you are there fella.

I am sure that the Answer Man has made 2000 HP from these things so he will be here shortly with the real recipe, this on the other hand is what we did. Just two normal guys, and a machine shop with a dyno. Good luck fella.

I apologize, I should have stated what I will be using my car for. Its a fast street/strip car. I take it out to the track once a week to drag a bit, and I do some street racing.
As far as cams go, I found this one that looked good. What do you think? If not, can you link me to one which you think is good? Thanks.

The cam that we used was pretty weak on lift, being it was a HR and very wide on the LSA, for the injection if you are going to use a sr, and a carb you will do alot better.

Do you recommend a carb over injection?

I like carbs, but that injection does run sweet. Really it does. Fires right up, and idles up til its warm and then drops to 950. Was kind of a bear to get tuned but we used a wide band on a dyno to get the WOT stuff. Still working on some of the drivebility things with it. I think if we could have done it again, the cam .050 numbers would be just alittle shorter. Other than that and the initial cost, the injection is sweet. I am considering putting a similar system on my wifey's 383. Time will tell.
But on the other hand.........nothing looks cooler than a Dominator sitting on top ;)

Are your headers not fitting the heads, or the chassis? How are they not fitting.

The pro 1 uses a raised exhaust port. I'm pretty sure..........we used a set of Lemons 2 1/8 x 4 headers and they fit.....................LIKE A GLOVE. Those people really have their act together when it comes to headers..........
Bottom is a Hooker Super Comp, top is the Lemons...

That is well beyond cool. I've heard a lot of great things about the Lemons headers.

The guy that owns all that BBC stuff, is also the guy that is building the LT1 that I referenced in the LT1 thread.

I have got a set of 1 7/8 x 3.5 that I will check on the dyno..........Tom is matching the adapters to the heads, and if they work they will be going in the car. The are Lemons. Have to cut the inner fenders though, the center two pipes on both sides wrap around the frame.

I just used that cam in a 489ci Dart 310 headed complete assembly I sold to Wayne Good from Cecil County. His big Chevelle @ 3200 or so has been 9.47 with absolutely no power adders and all motor. Motor did like 720 hp and was only 12:1 compression. So yes, that cam does work well.

We just upgraded and freshened up a 522ci, to 532ci, just 4.600 bore, for John P and it went 937hp @ 7400 rpm and was still making decent power when I was told to quit. The 4' crank and 4.600" bore with these engines just make killer hp. He also has it in a 69 Camaro that already runs 9.30"s so my work will be tested. Never failed yet.
Let me know if you want that thing to be a killer. I was making the 532's 10 years ago with a simple Pro Ram making twin dominators 950hp. So your little 502 will be fine. Do not put any head larger than a 335cc. You will have to turn the engine very hard to make good power. If you choose to do that 8200rpm will not be out of the question. The 4.5" bore does not help the big head issue's
