View Full Version : "hyd. roller vs. solid roller"

52-540

I'm building a 540 for street/strip use and want to be able to pull 7,200-7400 rpm. I was told to use a hyd. roller cam, but have read that they have problems making that much rpm because the lifter are to heavy. So the solid roller would be the way to go, but I was told that the solid roller doesn't work well on the street because the rpms are to low and that causes other problems. What would be the best cam for my application?

The hyd roller lifters suk.!!! But if you want you can run a hyd roller cam with the solid roller lifters you can. I'd call Cam-Motion and ask for Dan. They can custom grind you anything you want. I've used them for years and they have yet to stear me wrong. Be ready to answer a ton of questions about your combination. PM me here if you have any other questions.

Thanks, Don

you can run the hyd roller with no problems, just have to use titanium valves and retainers and anything else you can lighten up that moves of the other side of the rocker. We run hyd roller lifters @ 8000 rpm with no problems on sbf and sbc but run the lifter @ .010 left before bottom. This allows the oil to be there and still work well and we can run the seat pressure up to a ton. But, the lightweight is the way to go. There is absolutely no reason to make a hyd roller then put solids on it, that is absurd. You could just do the solid and still have the maintance issue. If you want power, run the solid hippo lifter and you won't have any problems on the street what so ever. I can't even remember the last time I lost a wheel on the street ever. With todays lifters and better grinds, you can have them use a pretty smooth opening and closing and not beat up the valve train. Either way, lightweight everything with hyd or run a good hippo solid set up you will be fine. I can help with either.
