Yes, It just has to be a Stainless steel mesh instead of steel, You can get buy with the 1003 with fresh water only. Even with the salt water, the 1003 will work fine but you will have to rinse the engine out every time after use in salt water. Same for Brass freeze plugs, needed only for Salt Water. Here is a fact, unhook the battery cables when in storage, this will keep everything neutral and even with salt and fresh water, the engine gaskets and freeze plugs will last twice as long.
I have a question of a similar nature. I recently purchased a set of 215 pro1 platinum aluminum heads for my chevy 406. The recommended head gasket is felpro 1014. I have received different opinions on if these particular gaskets require being retorqued or not. The part number is FPP-1014 performance /marine. I was told that all fel-pro head gaskets with the performance/marine markings must be retorqued. Also noticed with these gaskets that the silcone bead around the large water jacket openings is not wide enough to cover the sides of openings. Not sure if this will cause problem or not.

It does not have to be retoruqed. That is old school non rolled gaskets. These new gaskets are rolled threw a pressure system that pre torques them. You do not have to retorque. The water jackets should cover the water port, if not, use some sort of decent sealer to do it. Orange silicon works fine when it is applied properly. Does not need but very little.
