View Full Version : SBC on a budget
I just bought my first drag car and I am looking for some sbc engine build sugestions. The car just needs an engine an I have a max budget of 8k. I am going to try to change as little on the rest of the car as possible for now. I intend to run this as non-electronics bracket car. I would like to get the car to run as fast as possible in Denver @ 5300 feet msl. I have a Holley 830 and a MSD 6a ignition. 100% track use
70 Camaro
TH350 trans
456 gears
11.5 slicks
leaf springs, rear air shocks, traction bars, frame rails, front drag shocks
Sugestions please.
The car has run 11:50 @ 113 with a 383 that made around 450hp

What Parts do you have towards an engine build as of now? If you are starting off with a blank sheet. I'd suggest going with the SHP Dart block right off. Not much more $money$ invested in one if you don't already have a block. You'll have a lot better foundation to build upon.
I sent you a PM with some contact information for the rest of the build if you're intrested.

Crap man, 8,000 can go really fast. Sounds alot like what I am building now. If you want a list of parts lemme know.
I would like to go as fast as possible, I am hoping for high 10's or low 11's. The only parts that I have are the Holley 830, MSD distributor, and the MSD ignition.

Are you going to be doing the assembly yourself?
Don
I don't have the ability to do it myself. Since I have no experience with race motors I'm trying to get some opinions.

First question is,,
- What area are you in ?
even though i may not be in your area or don, or bill, or carl etc, one of us may know or know of a good builder in your area
- In my opinion you will have about $1,000 labor in building an engine + all machine costs. Machine work will probally cost you about $1,000 on the high side so figure that and that leaves you with a $6,000 budget
In looks like your in Denver ? If so your BEST bet is gonna be to contact Mark Jones. His engines make power. If you PM me your contact information i will have Mark call you tonight
Carl AKA CNCBLOCKS is a good person to check with for your engine block needs, he sells the Dart blocks prepped and GM blocks with splayed main caps
You should also check with Tom from 3VPerformance

I dont do engines out of the state unless they are local as i always tune the engine in the customers car, i have no plans of going to Denver :D
You have to run higher compression at your elevation and you can due to your elevation
Unfortunatley I can't PM due to my low post count. Can you PM me or send me an e-mail?
Thanks for the helpful info.

go to my website and check out the XXtra engines. The 408 is a killer deal and is new. Will put you into the 10.00's with no problems with proper gear and converter. Dyno tested and tuned and your carb will work perfect. $6000.00, ready to ship. I will guarantee the engines hp and it has already been tested. This is a one off engine because I had the heads swapped in on new Pro 1 cnc ones. The customer did not want the steel package. Call me if your interested.

What Hp is that engine Bill? Would you mind posting the numbers here?
Vmo,... depending on the parts Bill has used,...$6k will be hard to beat any where. Might want to look into what he is offering.

With the added mufflers now, it was 635. I have lost about 20 hp with the new quiet ordenance I have to deal with. But even @ this hp, your most likely going to run 9.80's or something. 4340 crank, 4340 H-beam rods, Wiseco Pistons etc. Its all decent stuff. Some has been reconditioned. The website is very clear on what is new and what was reused. The block is new, pistons, cam, lifters, timing, set oil pan etc. It is a very nice engine, DYNO tested with the 850 I have.
