looking at buying a used sportsman block. The catch to it is that the deck has been milled .018 off of the 8.2 deck height leaving the deck height now at 8.182. Do any of you see this as an issue?

Do you already have your rotating assembly...Crank, rods, and pistons?

No I do not. My concern was that if its been milled already once would I be able to clean it up again if I had to.

The max we recommend milling the Ford block would be .100. You should have no problems cleaning the deck up if needed in the future.

Let me know if you have any other questions?

that would cause no problem @ all and you would have plenty left. I never 0 deck anything unless it is absolutely a must. I give it .001-.010 for clean ups.

Another question about the sportman...What would be the biggest bore you could go to?

4.185" Bore will be very safe.

4.185 and not because the block won't do 4.2, its because the head gasket is very iffy? Keep the bore no more than 4.155 or 4.165, you will be happy

We've actually seen the blocks go as far as 4.250 ...

we have seen that also and it always takes the gasket out with any type of power. Stock stuff or even a decent application is o.k., but, you get her a little warm and watch that push the gasket right out. We all know an engine builder who does this and you are pretty much screwed when it comes to a freshen up. This would only be a last resort ditch effort to keep the block. I would then oring figure 8 the head and receiver grove the block, This does seem to stay as good as it gets.

Is the oiling system in the Sportsman 351 different then the Iron Eagle oiling system. If you install Roller Cam Bearings do you have to do anything different to the oiling system.

Essentially the same, only difference is the IE's are drilled for dry sump.

By roller cam are you looking at standard style Hydraulic or Solid or are you talking about a 55mm style?

But, keeping the head gasket with any power is tuff!
