Timing is everything.
And the timing is right for the revival of the Short Track SuperNationals.
The event, promoted successfully by Brett Deyo at N.Y.'s Afton Speedway in 2006, will return after a two-year absence this October with a new location: Five Mile Point Speedway in Kirkwood, N.Y. On Sat., Oct. 10, Deyo will present the second edition of the Short Track SuperNationals with a 50-lap unsanctioned Modified event as the headliner.
"The last time this event was run, it was a success," Deyo, 26, said. "I've had so many requests from drivers, fans and media members to bring the event back. Looking over track schedules for this year, I thought there was no better time."
Deyo came to an agreement with Five Mile Point Speedway's Andrew Harpell to host the SuperNationals at the 59-year-old facility.
"The goal of this event is to provide a working-man's option for Columbus Day Weekend," Deyo said.
"This show will be affordable for race fans and attractive to competitors."
A purse of over $15,000 has been posted for the big-block/small-block Modifieds - $3,500 to win, $1,000 for fifth, $500 for 10th and $200 to take the green flag.
Dart will be offering prize certificates to the winners of the event, which include $500.00 toward the purchase of a Dart block for 1st place, $250.00 toward a set of Dart heads for 2nd place, and $75.00 toward a Dart intake manifold for the 3rd place winner. A special $1000.00 bonus will also be awarded to a team that wins both this event and the R.O.C. 100 Dart Dirt event that will be taking place at Five Mile Point later in October. If a team wins only one of the events, but participates in both that team will still qualify for a $500.00 prize.
Through Dart's promotions, the SuperNationals winner could collect $6,500 in prize money and product for just 50 laps!
Sail panels will be permitted. Competitors have the option of gasoline or methanol. Any 13- by 92-inch Modified tire will be legal. 358-Modifieds will be granted a weight break. A complete set of rules will be announced well in advance of the event.
Drivers will draw for heat-race starting positions, with a top-12 redraw for the feature. In the interest of fan entertainment, there will be no time trials.
Deyo believes Five Mile Point is an ideal location for the Short Track SuperNationals.
"The location works well to draw from the Mi ddletown (N.Y.) area, Western New York, Central New York, the Capital District, the Southern Tier and the Pennsylvania 358-Modified circuit.
"The size of the track (a large quarter-mile) should allow the big- and small-block cars to run evenly. Fans and racers will definitely be impressed with the improvements put in place at the Point over the past few years."
The 2006 edition of the Short Track SuperNationals drew a field of 54 Modifieds. Mike Ricci of Rosendale, N.Y., was the winner over J.R. Hurlburt, Brian Weaver, Joey Grammes and Davie Franek.
The Race of Champions Dart Pure Stock Tour, Four Cylinder Stocks and an open event for Vintage Modifieds will complete the one-day event.
A "split program" will be run, with support-division qualifying held earlier in the afternoon, prior to the Modifieds hitting the track in the evening.
Admission prices, start times, entry information and other details will be released in the near future.
"All the specifics are in the works," Deyo said.
